‘First impressions count’, as the saying goes and one way to make a great first impression is to have a whiter smile. White teeth are great for your confidence. They can also make you look instantly younger. As dentists, teeth whitening is the easiest and least invasive treatment we can offer.
In this post we outline the options available for teeth whitening, including our preference: Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed. If you find this post useful, please share.
What causes discoloured teeth?
Before we explain the treatments available, let’s first look at the most common causes of discoloured teeth. There are a variety of reasons why your teeth might be discoloured — diet and lifestyle are often the culprits. Smoking, for example, is not a good idea if you want to maintain white teeth.
Discolouration can also be caused by your genetic make-up or past use of medications: taking the antibiotic tetracycline has been linked to a brown-grey discolouration of teeth in some patients.
The options for teeth whitening
Here are some of the options available for whitening your teeth:
Whitening toothpastes
Paint-on gels
Whitening strips
Custom bleaching trays
In-office whitening systems
Be aware that in some cases, depending on your desired results, teeth whitening may not always be the best option.
Also, if you choose a home-whitening option, like gels, you need to be motivated to stick with it as the process can take several weeks before you reach a shade that you’re happy with.
Zoom WhiteSpeed
Parnell Dentistry have been performing teeth whitening for our clients for 17 years. We recently decided that it was time to update our whitening machine and chose Zoom WhiteSpeed to replace it.
We chose this machine as many of our clients live busy lives, so we wanted a quicker treatment time and we wanted to reduce the chances of sensitivity associated with whitening machines. The Zoom WhiteSpeed ticked all the boxes.
The benefits of Zoom Whitespeed
The Zoom WhiteSpeed enables us to achieve the best outcome for our clients and reduce the chances of post-operative sensitivity. We can reduce the intensity of the light and place the gel precisely where we want it for best results. We can also achieve more shade changes than take-home products.
Zoom WhiteSpeed is clinically proven to whiten teeth up to eight shades lighter in 45 minutes of chairside time. The LED light used by the WhiteSpeed provides 40% better results than non-light whitening systems and best of all, 75% of our patients experience no discomfort.
How it works
First we protect your gums with a special covering and then apply a hydrogen peroxide whitening gel. The gel breaks down the molecular bonds that make up the stains on your teeth. The WhiteSpeed light acts on the gel speeding up the process, so all the whitening is done during one visit of around one-and-a-half hours.
What’s the first step?
If you desire whiter teeth, we recommend that you visit your dentist for a short consultation. Your dentist will discuss the most likely reasons for the current colour of your teeth and recommend the best options for you.
We can’t predict exact final shades and outcomes for our patients, but it is rare to have a patient unhappy with the result.
